Which USPS service should I use?

USPS publishes a handful of headline services, and the right pick comes down to weight, distance, and how fast it needs to arrive. The calculator above quotes all of them in one shot, but the cheat sheet is:

  • USPS Ground Advantage

The replacement for First-Class Package + Retail Ground rolled into one. 2-5 business days, packages up to 70 lb. Cheapest USPS option for anything between 1oz and 70lb under ~$10 of declared value.

  • USPS Priority Mail

1-3 business days. Includes $100 of insurance built in. Best when the buyer expects fast-but-not-overnight delivery; the price-vs-speed ratio is hard to beat for packages over 1 lb.

  • USPS Priority Mail Express

Overnight to most US addresses, 2-day to the rest. Money-back guarantee. Pricey, but the only USPS option that competes with UPS Next Day Air on speed.

  • USPS Priority Mail International

6-10 business days internationally. Cheapest international option for parcels under ~4 lb to most countries. Tracking depends on the destination postal system.

Why are USPS rates here cheaper than usps.com?

USPS publishes two rate cards: retail (what you pay walking into a post office) and commercial (what high-volume shippers pay). The gap is significant - commercial rates are typically 10-25% lower than retail for Ground Advantage and Priority Mail.

Commercial rates have historically been gated behind a Volume Commitment, but third-party platforms like shiponline.app pool shipping volume across thousands of small businesses to qualify everyone for the cheaper tier. That's the entire pricing advantage in one sentence - we pass the commercial discount through to you, then add a flat per-label fee for the software.

What ZIP codes and dimensions does the calculator need?

Carriers quote based on origin ZIP, destination ZIP, weight, and dimensions. USPS prices vary by zone (1-9 depending on the distance between origin and destination ZIPs), so the from-zip field is just as important as the to-zip - shipping from a west-coast warehouse to a New York buyer crosses more zones than a coast-to-Texas hop.

Dimensions matter because of dimensional weight (a.k.a. DIM weight). Carriers charge for the larger of actual weight or volumetric weight - a big lightweight box still costs because it takes up truck space. The calculator uses your actual dimensions to compute the right billable weight.

Can I buy a USPS label after I get a quote?

Yes. Sign up for a free shiponline.app account, paste in the same details, pick the carrier and service that won the quote, and your label PDF prints in under a minute. We handle the USPS Click-N-Ship-style label generation, automatic tracking updates, and refund flow for unused labels.

The free-tier signup carries no monthly minimum, no credit card on file required at signup, and a flat $0.99 per Ground Advantage label (Pro tier discounts further at $0.79). What you see in the calculator is what you'll pay - the only way the price changes is if you add insurance, signature confirmation, or pick a different service.
