FedEx service tiers, ranked by speed

FedEx splits its US domestic services across two transportation networks: Ground (slower, denser, cheaper) and Express (faster, planes-first, pricier). Picking right depends on whether the buyer's patience or your shipping budget is the harder constraint.

  • FedEx Ground

1-5 business days to commercial addresses; same network handles Home Delivery for residential. The default cheapest FedEx option for parcels heading to business or residential addresses inside the contiguous US.

  • FedEx Express Saver

Guaranteed 3 business days. The middle ground between Ground (unguaranteed) and 2Day - useful when you need a delivery commitment without the 2Day price jump.

  • FedEx 2Day / 2Day AM

Guaranteed 2 business days, with AM giving morning delivery. Strong fit for products where the buyer is waiting on you to ship something time-sensitive but not emergency-tier.

  • FedEx Standard Overnight / Priority Overnight / First Overnight

Next business day delivery in three time windows: end-of-day (Standard), 10:30am (Priority), 8am (First). The premium tier - reserve for shipments where missing the deadline costs more than the rate.

Why are FedEx rates lower here than fedex.com?

FedEx publishes a List rate (the price you see logged out on fedex.com) and a series of negotiated commercial rates that shippers under contract receive. The gap can be 20-40% on Ground and even larger on Express services - FedEx pricing has more contract leverage than USPS, so the discount swing between tiers is bigger.

Getting onto a commercial-rate contract traditionally required a relationship with a FedEx account executive and a meaningful annual volume. shiponline.app aggregates volume across thousands of merchants to qualify all of them for commercial-tier rates without any per-shipper commitment. That's the entire pricing story: commercial rate + flat per-label fee for the software, full stop.

What about FedEx dim weight?

FedEx uses a dimensional weight divisor of 139 for US domestic shipments (same as UPS) and 166 for international. For any parcel over 1 cubic foot, the dim weight calculation kicks in: length × width × height ÷ 139, rounded up, compared against actual weight, and the carrier bills for whichever is larger.

The calculator computes this server-side so the rate you see already factors in dim weight. If you're shipping oversized boxes for fragile items, the quoted price reflects that surcharge honestly - no surprise upcharge when the label fires.

Can I print a FedEx label without an account?

Through shiponline.app, yes. We carry the FedEx integration on our side - you don't need a FedEx account number, a contract, or a daily pickup arrangement. Sign up free, paste in the same details you used in the calculator, pick the service, and the label PDF is in your hands within a minute. Tracking updates flow back into the dashboard automatically as FedEx scans the parcel through their network.
